JA Henckles  ~ Solingen Germany 1917 - 1954+

This Straight razor was forged in Solingen and is 5/8" by 3" and is shave ready.

Condition:

The metal is in nice shape and it has lower jimps. The scales are straight and the blade movement is smooth. The scales have a rougher feel towards the pivot pin and smoother at the other end. I don't know why other than maybe lots of use over the years.

Weight: 36g

Blade Length: 3"

Markings:
"Platinum" Carbon Steel Blade with Twins Logo on the Tang on one side, with JA Henckles. Twin Works SOLINGEN GERMANY on the other. #401

1920's....is a best guess

History:

ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS  ~ Solingen Germany

JA Henckles Trademarks

The history of the ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS brand starts on June 13, 1731 (under the Gemini star sign). It was on that day that knife-maker Peter Henckels from Solingen registered the "Twin" symbol as his trademark with the Cutlers’ Guild of Solingen. This symbol which is now well-known globally, is thus one of the oldest trademarks in the world. Today’s name – ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS - was given to the Company by a descendant of Peter Henckels, Johann Abraham Henckels.

JA Henckles

History of Solingen.

Solingen craftsmen made swords and daggers in the Middle Ages and are now better known for knives, razors and cutlery. There is evidence that the Cutlery industry existed from the beginning of the 14th Century. According to tradition, workers from Damascus, the ancient home of fine blade weapons, settled there about the middle of the twelfth century.

Known as the "City of Blades" Solingen is also a city of rivers, providing early hydro-powered factory tooling to achieve exceptional levels of uniformity and quantity unmatched in world of cutlery. Only blades forged from Steel in Solingen could bare the SOLINGEN name.

The most important producing centres in England and Germany were Sheffield and Solingen respectively. The historic centres of French production are Thiers, Nogent and Chatellerault. In the United States the cutlery industry was centred largely in New England and New York where English and German immigrant cutlers first began production.

Anatomy of a Straight Razor

David O'Neill - Restored & Honed by:

Every Straight Razor passes through Davids hands. He strives to maintain the original integrity of the razor and as such will rarely "unpin" the scales unless absolutely necessary. The cleaning process starts by hand with sand paper ensuring a gentle process, working up to a buffing wheel. Once the blade is back in good shape David uses water stones to set the bevel and then hone.

Gradually working his way up to 12K Japanese Stones & 30K Shapton stones, David produces an exceptional edge that is truly "Shave Ready". Examined under a 60x lens the process is finished with a leather strop and a test shave. Only then are the razors deemed ready for sale. His experience and patience guarantee you a razor that has been lovingly restored and made ready for the next generation to enjoy.

David is a retired artisan, collector and restorer from Nanaimo BC, Canada. His work is imported into Australia by The Wet Shaving Co.

All our Vintage & Antique Straight Razors have been very carefully selected for their condition and potential lifespan.

"What other products do we still have and are able to use, that perform as well as they did the day they were made? Especially when they come from a time so distant. It's incredible to think where & with whom these beautiful pieces have travelled. Now is your chance to continue their journey."

Each Straight Razor will come in a pouch and we will include the contacts of local craftsmen who can provide sharpening, honing services. So if at any time in the future you would like to re-sharpen them it will be an easy process.
